Q & A

I am a Spanish citizen living in Beijing. I know there is a free course about "Acupressure in First Aid: 18 Points for Treating Common Emergencies", by Doctor Patrick Che-to Yeung (or maybe taught by his disciples). Small brochures can be found in bookstores in Hong Kong, but I wonder if I could attend in person and learn this interesting course in Hong Kong (someone did the course in the past says it is two days course).

Don't Take Another Supplement Without Reading This... PDF Print E-mail
by Anita SK Cheung

So you are interested in learning about what to eat and what supplements to take to get your “best nutrition”? I do too. I even went to school to study about it.

Do you sometimes wonder why some people who seem to eat all the “wrong” foods live a long and happy life? And why some people who are so health conscious and eating all the “right” foods and supplements are sick and depressed?

Over the years, I have come to question more and more what “nutrition” really is. Why do we care about nutrition? It’s because we want to be nourished. From my own personal life experience and observation working with people, it has become very clear to me that full nourishment does not come on a plate or in a bottle.

Perhaps what is currently considered “nutrition” is only half (or less) of the equation…? Perhaps what we understand as “nutrition” is really an aspect of “nourishment”?

Think back to a time when you were passionately in love. You were floating on cloud nine. Colours were vivid. Your lover's touch and the feeling of exhilaration sustained you. Would you stop in the middle of your gaze into their eyes and say “wait a minute, I need to take my Multi-Vitamins” or “have my chocolate fix”?

Remember a time when you were deeply involved in a project you were passionate about. You were totally absorbed and engaged. Hours passed and you didn't even think about eating. Remember when you were a child and you were playing outside with friends in the evening. Your mother announced dinner was ready. You pretended you didn’t hear it. Who wants to eat, you said to yourself. The excitement of play took all your attention. Food didn’t even cross your mind.

We take in the experiences of life in ways that affect us on different levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. We hunger for play, fun, touch, intimacy, love, achievement, acknowledgement, self-expression, excitement, spiritual connection, etc…. All of these are essential forms of nourishment that keep us alive.

Healthy relationships, enjoyable physical activities, an engaging and meaningful career (or way to occupy our time), quiet moments to relax and reflect, sense of self worth and spiritual connection all satisfy our hunger for living.

When all the above forms of nourishments are balanced and fulfilling, our lives feed us, making what we eat secondary. “Nutrition” doesn't come close to giving us the joy, meaning and fulfillment “nourishment” provides. When we use food as a way to alleviate or suppress our hunger for nourishment the body and mind suffer. Weight gain is just one of the consequences. Disorders such as heart disease, cancer, obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes are widespread today. May we consider that one of the main reasons is because we are stuffing ourselves with foods when what we are really starving for is “nourishment”?

Food doesn't cross your mind when you're in love, being creative, having fun or being fully engaged in life. But when you're depressed, you may find yourself turning to food all the time for comfort and solace. Chronic fatigue, depression, frustration, anger, resignation, sadness and loneliness can all be considered our body’s cries for real nourishment, but instead of giving ourselves these things, we often turn to food that comes on a plate or supplements that come in a bottle for a quick fix.

It’s true that proper nutrition helps our mind work better and supports us to feel good and make better choices, but only to a certain extent. It takes listening to ourselves and connecting with the wisdom within to achieve true wellness. It takes accepting ourselves for who we are. It takes acknowledging that the source of real nourishment comes from within – and that’s called self love.

And perhaps most importantly it takes actually taking actions to express our inner yearning for LIFE. If we continuously ignore it and starve our hunger for LIFE itself, the best organic food and best supplements in the world won't satisfy us.

What is one thing you will do today to feed your life?
