Thanks,

Interview with Dadi Gulzar PDF Print E-mail
One of the leading lights of the Brahma Kumaris spiritual movement passed through HK recently.

"Everyone wants a tension free life—a happy life—so my message to HK people is if you want to have a tension-free life you need to know yourself and know God from whom you get the power to tolerate and be free of tension."

Interview with Dadi Gulzar in the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centre in Tin Hau
(Hong Kong, www.rajayoga.com.hk). With translation by Dr Nirmala.

By Peter Lloyd, 13th June 2007

P: Do you have any advice for HK people?
Dadi Gulzar: Everybody needs happiness and power in life whether it comes through good health, satisfying relationships or abundant wealth; but these experiences will not necessarily make us content under all circumstances. Tension builds inside people because they can’t forget what happened in the past; truly this habit of remembering the past is a waste of thought power. We need to ask ourselves “why waste thoughts?” Asking ‘why’ wastes the power of thought. When we say ‘why’ we have lots of unnecessary thoughts.

People are in the habit of thinking repeatedly of the past but not about what to do in the future; we think of problems or of the past. We need to recognise that the past is no longer in our hands but the future is in our hands; let’s decide how to improve the future. If we waste energy thinking of events that cannot be changed, tension increases and we lose tolerance.

Anger is like a fire, which burns the self and others. When we can’t tolerate, we get angry. If we ask people “is there anybody who has never been angry?”, nobody will raise their hand. Anger and feelings of being upset come when there is a lack of tolerance power. People don’t know where to get this power of tolerance.

In order to receive the power to tolerate, we need to have a connection with God. In order to connect with God, we need to know God. Once we receive tolerance power from the Divine, the power to change our inner negative traits will also grow; all forms of ego, anger, greed, lust and attachment—they rob us of pure energy—will diminish.

Everyone wants a tension free life—a happy life—so my message to HK people is if you want to have a tension-free life you need to know yourself and know God from whom you get the power to tolerate and be free of tension.

Whenever Dadi Gulzar meets somebody she asks them “who are you?”. They often reply, “I am a human being…I am so and so…my name is…”. But that is the name of the body—“who are you?”. (Dadi Gulzar directed this question to me, the interviewer).

P: Well some of the ways I think of myself include that ‘I am a child of God’ or a ‘spiritual being on a human path’ and refer to a part of me that is bigger than me; I call this ‘God’.
Dadi Gulzar: Understand that we are beings of light, a spirit in a human body; this is our picture (see opposite)—a point of light—souls in a human body. You are a soul; the child and the Father are separate from each other. They are different. If we have God within us or we are part of a bigger scheme referred to as ‘God’, then we should be able to manifest the same personality and powers as the Almighty (God). Can we do this?

P: My spiritual inspiration, Eileen Caddy, founder of the Findhorn community, said “There is no separation between God and I”.
Dadi Gulzar: The soul comes into the cycle of birth and death but God doesn’t; this different belief distinguishes the Brahma Kumaris’ spiritual knowledge from the teachings of many other groups. When souls experience sorrow, they tune into God so as to absorb the power of happiness and remove the sorrow. If we are part of God why do we need to invoke God? The human soul becomes tense and uptight but God doesn’t. This philosophy of souls, God and karma is studied at the Brahma Kumaris' centres in the seven-lesson foundation course.

P: I am currently engaged in Interfaith studies; do you have any comments on the interfaith movement?
Dadi Gulzar: God is one. I suggest that everybody should realise that God is one and the truth is one. If everybody knows and realises that truth then there will be no conflict. In today’s world, Catholics and Protestants, Hindus and Muslims fight because of their different views. In order to have unity we need to have one view. If the interfaith leaders sit together and share thoughts and experiences about the common thread amongst religions and reveal to the world that “we are all brothers” then there can be unity; this thought “we are children of the one Father” will generate unity. Interfaith leaders can also emphasise the importance of bringing values into daily life so as to finish all corruption and violence.

H: How to transform the anger inside, accept that the seed of all violence is inside us and not to blame others?
Dadi Gulzar: When people get angry and upset, they feel uneasy and afraid; they have to realise how much the habits of anger are hurting them. People even kill their conscience, even though the mind agrees that the behaviour is not helpful for the self or others. There can be so much internal force driving people to act in anger that people cannot change their patterns. After the event, people recognise that that action was not beneficial. The seed of force is a lack of tolerance power.

P: What is the role of India in the world spiritually?
Dadi Gulzar: India is the original land of religions; yoga started there. Spirituality began there. It is the land of religion.

P: Sri Aurobindo has made a prophesy the partition of India and Pakistan is temporary. What is your view of this? (This question followed on a pre-interview brief discussion about the Brahma Kumaris starting in Hyderabad, Sindh, part of Pakistan today. After the partition in 1947, the Brahma Kumaris community emigrated to Mount Abu, Rajasthan.)
Dadi Gulzar: We also agree. In fact, the Brahma Kumaris understand that the whole world, not only India and Pakistan, will become unified. Spiritual power will bring that unity.

P: Do you have any tips for non-Brahma Kumaris students to make their life better?
Dadi Gulzar: Practise meditation. People may not become students of the Brahma Kumaris but at least they can enjoy meditation and study courses of meditation. The Brahma Kumaris have centres all around the world in more than 104 countries (www.bkwsu.org).

P: Given that the name ‘Brahma Kumaris’ means ‘daughters of Brahma’, what is your view of the role of women in this time of change?
Dadi Gulzar: Women play leading roles in this institution but there are male teachers and students and families too; entire families study with the Brahma Kumaris. Generally, women have greater tolerance power and will use their loving nature to apply themselves deeply to inner transformation and the personal growth of others.

P: What is women’s role in society in general?
Dadi Gulzar: The blessing of the present time means that, through greater educational opportunities, women are taking on more responsibility not just within the Brahma Kumaris, but in all areas of society.

Many thanks

Peter
