In October, a protest entered the Guinness Book of World Records, when over 23.5 million people ‘stood up’ against poverty. Organised as part of the United Nation’s Millennium Campaign, the big ‘Stand Up’ was intended as a way of reminding the governments of the world, that they made a commitment to eradicate world poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. This worldwide protest was part of a month of mobilisation, surrounding the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, held on October 17th.

Participants in this massive movement came from over 50 different countries around the world, and all were united in their aim to show governments their commitments had not been forgotten and are expected to be met.

The main event within the ‘Stand Up Against Poverty’ campaign was held in Times Square, New York, and attended by United Nations Secretary General, Koi Annan. “We are standing up to hold leaders to their promises,” he said. “We are standing up because, until they meet the Goals, we will not give up.”
