British musician and long term human rights campaigner, Peter Gabriel, has been named the Man of Peace for 2007 at the 7th Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.
The former frontman of rock group Genesis, who began his solo career in the 70s, has made many contributions to furthering world peace and human cooperation. Political songs such as Biko, written to raise awareness of the murdered anti-apartheid South African leader Steve Biko, was the i rst anti-apartheid single ever released.
Peter also founded WOMAD World of Arts, Music and Dance. Now one of the foremost music festivals worldwide, WOMAD publicises music, art and dance from different parts of the world. Cementing his place as a peace campaigner back in 1992, he launched Witness, a not-for-proi t organisation that supplies human rights activists with video cameras and computers, enabling them to document human rights abuse in their countries.
Speaking about winning, Peter said: I am so naïve. I believe in goodness. I hope we will succeed in getting to the roots of human beings, i nding the magic of our soul and spirit to transform data into information, and information into knowledge, knowledge into wisdom and war into peace. This is surely the award I am most happy about, considering those who gave it to me.
