"Evolution in Science and Spirituality"
Since earliest times, humanity has speculated on the questions of how the world came to be what it is and also why it was created in the first place. Man's early speculations have given rise to myths and legends which form part of the culture and history of every ancient civilization.
However, with the coming of the age of Reason, these speculations changed into scientific theories and explanations and the most important of these is the theory of 'Evolution' as given out by the 19th century naturalist Charles Darwin. His view, stated in its simplest form, is that changes in the physiology of different species take place all the time. They are random in nature and the changes that help a particular species to adapt to its surroundings are retained and passed on to its progeny whereas the changes that are not helpful are rejected.
Also, if there is a change in the environment, the species either perishes or finds another conducive environment or if it is sufficiently lucky these random changes enable it to survive in the existing environment.
However, this view has obvious limitations. Firstly, it only discusses the 'how' or the process by which life forms have grown. It leaves the question of the 'why' of this world still unanswered. Secondly, in this theory, the focus is only on living creatures whereas the universe is much vaster than the life forms existing in it.
Spirituality and mysticism do not arbitrarily halt after discussing past factors but also go on to discuss the 'why' and the future of creation as a whole. In their view, evolution is taking place at several levels. There is the evolution of the human species, of each individual who is not only a member of the species but also a unique person and lastly of creation as a whole. The synthesis of the two will mean mysticism taking the help of science in formulating its perceptions and science supplementing its explanations with the 'direct experience and vision' of spirituality.
